Some people like learning.
Some people like reading.
Some people like writing.
Some people like listening.
Some people like all those things.
Music is one channel through which they can all be experienced. It is also a fabulous medium to stimulate thinking, feeling and doing in new and different ways.
The combination of music – the notes and rhythm, and lyrics – the story of the song, can be very powerful and summed up beautifully by these two quotes.
“Music gives a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” Plato
“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.” Maya Angelou
I love a good melody and lyrics that tell a story, make me think or deliver a message. Sometimes it’s the whole song and its meaning; sometimes it’s just one or two lines.
And so I thought I’d run another experiment.
Every Wednesday, I’ll write a short blog about some song lyrics that resonate with me and could perhaps have a simple thought, message or insight for you. The experiment is called Midweek Musical Magic. And to quote Professor Dumbledore giving voice to J.K. Rowling’s words
“Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic”.
As a starting place, I’ve chosen Whole World is Watchin by Within Temptation
“You build your walls then break them away ’cause that is what it takes.
You saved yourself. You found who you are. That never goes away.
And I know you wish for more, and I know you try.
And now you realize, you know the time is right.
The whole world is watching when you rise.
The whole world is beating for you right now.
Your whole life is flashing ‘fore your eyes.
It’s all in this moment that changes all.”
For me the simple message is that for many, many reasons, we build barriers that prevent us from being who we want to be or do what we want to do. To break down those barriers and free ourselves from our self imposed limits is our choice and our responsibility and can happen in a moment.
Once the barriers are down, the world – however small or big you see that – is there, waiting to support you, love you and cheer you on. So what are you waiting for. The time is right now. Do what you need to do before you let more time and opportunity slip away.
- What barriers do you want to lower or break down?
- Who in your world is waiting for you to rise?
- What are you waiting for?
Sometimes calling out our barriers is all we need to do to break them. I invite you to consider sharing with us in the comments below. What barriers have you already broken down? What barriers do you want to lower?
We are watching and waiting to see you rise.
